The year was 1931. The United States and much of the world were in the throes of the Great Depression. Jobs were scarce, and many families were having difficulty making ends meet. In the tiny town of Manchester, PA, a housewife named Katharine Beecher had an idea. Undaunted by the nation’s economic woes, she decided to transform her talent for making delicious candy into a small business. She started producing large quantities of her popular Butter Mints in the kitchen of her home, and a legend was born.
